Text Box: Ennerdale Highlands ‘Ennerdale Highlands’ are located in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia at a height of 600 metres. Our aim at Ennerdale is to produce premium quality Scottish Highland Cattle. We take beef genetics seriously, whilst concentrating on cattle with correct structure, high quality beef production, outstanding temperament and easy handling. We achieve this by selecting the best AI Sires available - to ensure the production of premium quality Beef Cattle with an excellent temperament. All our breeding cattle are carefully selected to ensure premium quality beef production, whilst retaining their easy handling properties. An important part of the selection process involves scanning the animals to ensure a high ratio of meat to fat to bone. We also like to show Ennerdale animals and started with our local Yass Show in 2003, then ventured onto our first Canberra Royal Show in 2004. Seonaid of Ennerdale won Supreme Exhibit at the 2006 National Highland Show, a great achievement in only our second year of showing at that level. We attribute this to our AI programme which uses the best Champion Bulls from around the world. Now having established a firm base of high quality Ennerdale genetics, we will be carefully selecting bulls suitable to carry the Ennerdale name into the future. IT ALL STARTED... after we bought Bonnie of Durness, a 12 year old cow from Janette McKenzie, Ben Eyrie Fold in 2001. Bonnie was very comfortable on our 5 acres, but soon off spring started to arrive and the numbers expanded. We moved to a larger property and now have a thriving stud of Scottish Highland cattle At Ennerdale the animals are tested each year under the National Johne’s Programme. We believe animal health is a important factor in any cattle stud. Also at Ennerdale we have adopted the Scottish way with our breeding programme. We join our heifers at 3 years old because Highlands are a slower growing beef animal we know this is giving our Heifers the best chance. The Scots have been doing it for hundreds of years and for good reason. Highland Cattle are not fully grown until 5 years of age and this policy ensures they will still be calving at 20-21 years. We think it is important to share knowledge through Field Days - with people gathering from far afield. Our aim in this is to introduce the Highland, show its potential and also its attributes. Guest speakers cover topics from animal health, breeding programmes, AI information, feeding, easy yard handling tips, show preparation for the beginner to more experienced, including halter training and items required for showing. We find a great deal of information is exchanged informally. We love to talk Highlands and are more than willing to assist with people’s questions. Visitors are welcome to the farm.
